Waist Loom
The ancestral backstrap loom is a traditional weaving technique used by ancient cultures such as the Maya, the Inca, and many other Indigenous communities. In this method, the warp threads are stretched between a fixed point and the weaver’s own waist, allowing the artisan to control the tension and design of the fabric with their body movements.
This remarkable technique produces textiles rich with symbolic and traditional designs, serving as a means of passing down knowledge, stories, and cultural values from generation to generation. Beyond being a craft, it is considered both an artistic and spiritual practice, connecting the weaver with their heritage and the natural world.
Indigenous communities across Cusco, passionately dedicated to preserving the ancestral art of backstrap weaving and natural dyeing. Each piece we create is more than a textile — it is a living expression of our cultural identity, Andean worldview, and centuries of collective wisdom.
